Permanent Resident Card Renewal

If you are a permanent resident of Canada, you are likely to have been issued with a Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) as official proof of your status. In order to return to Canada by any commercial transporter, such as a plane, train, boat or bus, you will be required to present this card at the port of entry.

PR Cards are usually valid for 5 years. In order to renew your card, you must be physically present in Canada and must not be under an effective removal order. In addition, you must not have been convicted of an offence related to the misuse of a PR card.

You will be eligible to renew your PR Card if you have met your residency obligation. You can meet this obligation by being physically present in Canada or by maintaining certain ties to Canada. If you are outside Canada and do not have a valid PR Card to return to Canada, you will need to obtain a travel document from a Canadian visa office.
